Background on our organization
Carolina Children’s Charity has been a community organization from the very beginning. The Charity was created by local volunteers committed to meeting the needs of local children with birth defects and/or childhood diseases.
We were founded in October 1987 by a group of experienced and dedicated local volunteers, many of whom are still very involved with the Charity today. With the dedication and commitment of the Tri-County Fire Chiefs Association, WCBD NBC 2, Lowcountry firefighters, and many other local groups, we are able to assist thousands of Lowcountry families when their child is diagnosed with a birth defect and/or childhood disease.
Carolina Children’s Charity has no state or national affiliation, and receives no government grants or reimbursement for services. The Charity relies solely
on the generosity of the community in its fundraising efforts. Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and staffed by 2 employees, Carolina Children’s Charity is making a positive impact on the health needs of children.
Since the Charity’s founding in 1987, it has provided assistance to thousands of Lowcountry children with birth defects or other disabling diseases in services totaling more than $4.6 million. These range from asthma to cerebral palsy, from juvenile diabetes to cancer, and many more in between. All grant recipients must be age 18 and under and reside in Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton or Dorchester county. In the past, Carolina Children’s Charity has provided assistance to cover the costs of special equipment, medications, medically necessary evaluation and testing, and much more to Lowcountry families.
Carolina Children’s Charity raises funds with three major special events – the Boot Drive, the Cornhole tournament / Band Blast and the care • give • run 5K Partial Trail Run and Family Fun Walk. With the help of Lowcountry firefighters, local businesses, sponsors, and many other groups, we are able to provide assistance to so many special children in our community.
